Listening to Windows Media streams under Linux

I am stuck at work today, which sucks in itself, but to make things worse there’s football on and I don’t have a radio.

BBC Radio Five can’t broadcast football coverage over the Internet as they don’t have a licence or something.

So, I try Talk Sport. They seem happy to broadcast (as they don’t do live commentary I expect), but they only do Windows Media and I am running Linux.

So, looks like no radio for me then, will have to rely on Web updates.

Except, I seem to remember that MPlayer can play streams.

So, go to Talk Sport, view the page source, extract the stream URL.

mplayer http://212.50.185.86/talkSPORT

Bloody hell, it works!

Bugger, we’re one-nil down after 5 minutes, don’t wanna listen now.
